The Fjord Of Sagas, Fables And Unique Nature
Borgarfjordur is known as the Saga fjord because of its many important historical events. We get a chance to climb the Grabrok volcanic crater and get warmed at Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring which produces 180 liters per second of water that is nearly boiling – 97° Celsius. Our next stop will be at Snorrastofa, a cultural – and medieval center, founded in memory of Snorri Sturluson, and situated at his ancient homestead at Reykholt. It is one of Iceland’s most renowned historical sites where some of the finest works of Old Icelandic literature were written.
We will have lunch at Brúarás Geo Center, which is an information center and restaurant. This former community center has been renovated and modernized and, in addition to providing good food, it is specially designed to enjoy the picturesque surrounding mountains and glaciers. After lunch, we will continue to Hraunfossar, a series of waterfalls pouring from beneath Hallmundarhraun, a wide lava field. Barnafoss – the Children’s falls, is nearby with its own tragic tale.
In the end of the day, we will enjoy an entertainment and meet a local artist.
