Heading east over the mountain-road Þrengsli.

Our first stop will be in the small seaside village Eyrarbakki. For centuries, the harbour at Eyrarbakki was the main port in the south of the country and Eyrarbakki was the trading centre for the whole of the south. By 1925, however, Eyrarbakki had lost it‘s importance as a trading centre. Eyrarbakki is a quaint, little village with many old, small, wooden houses which are especially nice to visit before and around the christmas holidays.

We will visit the couple Ásta and Valgeir in their homimage 809x578e at Eyrarbakki. They will tell us about the history of Eyrarbakki and Christmas legends of the 13 Icelandic Yuletide lads. They will sing and play the guitar.
You will also be provided with a traditional Icelandic Christmas dinner at Rauða húsið or The Red House restaurant. The visit to Eyrarbakki will without a doubt become an unforgetable acquaintance with the genuine culture of Iceland.

We will drive further to Flúðir and visit the oldest swimming pool in Iceland: The Secret Lagoon. The water comes from the surrounding hot springs and we will be able to enjoy a bath in the nice, warm water in the cold winter night. If we are lucky we will float in the hot water under a sky bright from stars or even the Northern lights!

The hymn Heyr himnasmiður (Hear, Smith of Heavens). The poem is written by Kolbeinn Tumason born in 1173 but the music is composed by Thorkell Sigurbjörnsson born 1938. This hymn is the oldest known hymn in the Nordic countries. It is really cherished by so many Icelanders, it really touches our hearts.

English translation:
Listen, smith of the heavens,
what the poet asks.
May softly come unto me
your mercy.
So I call on thee,
for you have created me.
I am thy slave,
you are my Lord.

God, I call on thee to heal me.
Remember me, mild one1,
Most we need thee.
Drive out, O king of suns,
generous and great,
every human sorrow
from the city of the heart.

Watch over me, mild one,
Most we need thee,
truly every moment
in the world of men.
send us, son of the virgin,
good causes,
all aid is from thee,
in my heart.
